Standard 10 Unit 3 - AN INTERVIEW WITH ARUN KRISHNAMURTHI  : With Difficult Words And Verbs,

 Arun Krishnamurthy was just 17 years old when he founded (સ્થાપિત કર્યું) the NGO Environmentalist Foundation of India (EFI). Beginning (શરૂઆત) with the Turtle Walk – a move to save turtle eggs and young hatchlings (ઇંડામાંથી તાજેતરમાં નીકળેલા બચ્ચાં) in Chennai, today Arun and his team of volunteers (સેવકો) have cleaned (સાફ કર્યું) beaches and various (વિવિધ) water bodies in Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi, Coimbatore and Puducherry.

    The team cleans lakes, beaches and zoos, plants trees, educates (શિક્ષણ આપે છે) people through street plays and also makes environment-friendly (પર્યાવરણ અનુકૂળ) paper bags. Arun’s team has students who joined him when they were in Class – 7 and continue (ચાલુ રાખે છે) to work with him even after five years.

Which experience as a child inspired (પ્રેરણા આપી) you to take up the cause of the environment (પર્યાવરણ)? What was your first activity (પ્રવૃત્તિ)?

A beautiful lake next to my house, which once had a lot of birds, frogs and snakes, was heavily polluted (પ્રદૂષિત). It led to the spread of mosquitoes and turned a lovely (સુંદર) place into an ugly (ભયંકર) neighbourhood (પડોશ). This hurt me badly and I wanted to do something about it. I got together with a couple (થોડાક) of my friends and cleaned (સાફ કર્યું) the pond next to my house. This was the first activity.

What kind of support (આધાર) did you get from your parents and teachers? Was there any conflict (ટકરાવ) between study-time and activism (સામાજિક કાર્ય)?

I have supportive (આધારરૂપ) parents who understood that my interest was the environment (પર્યાવરણ). They have never stopped me from doing what I want. On my part, I also made sure that I did not fail my parents in any way. I always informed them about everything that I did and took their advice (સલાહ) before jumping into actions. I have teachers who taught me how to go about things.

They also taught me humility (વિનમ્રતા) – so that I did not become snobbish (ઘમંડી) or arrogant (અહંકારી) and start thinking I was a superstar (સુપરસ્ટાર) because I was doing this environment work. They taught me to be simple (સરળ) and keep learning all the time. I am not an activist (સામાજિક કાર્યકર), I am an environmentalist (પર્યાવરણ કાર્યકર). I have learnt (શીખ્યું) so much by doing this work.

How did your school and college further your interest?

Both my school and college had plenty of green cover (હરિયાળો વિસ્તાર) and both were home to several other life forms (જીવજંતુઓ). This made me understand their importance (મહત્ત્વ), how beautiful (સુંદર) they are and why we need to protect (રક્ષા) them. These animals are on their own, find their own food and are always active (સક્રિય), on the move and never lazy (આળસુ). It is so positive (સકારાત્મક); we have a lot to learn from them.

Did you feel my hesitation(હિચખીચાહટ) in quitting(છોડવું) a well paying job and venturing (સાહસ કરવો) into this full-time? What were the options you are wighed before you were arrived (આવવું,પહોંચવું) at your decision?

It is always good to decide in favour(પક્ષ) of what you really love to do(પ્રેમ). I quit my job at Google, but I still keep in touch with my friends there. So only my duties(ફરજો) at Google have come to an end, not my emotional bond(જોડાણ).

I understood that I had to leave the job at that minute in 2010, or else I would never be daring(સાહસી) enough to do so. I could not sit back and enjoy life when environmental damage(નુકસાન) was happening on such a large scale(વિસ્તાર). I wanted to do something and that something needed my full attention(ધ્યાન). So I left Google for EFl.

What kind of garbage(કચરો) do people throw into water bodies(જળાશયો)? How do you deal with the removal(દૂર) of this garbage once you clean the water body?

Everything from a diaper to worn out slippers – we find everything in our lakes. This is so disturbing(વિચલિત) because it is water and water is the basis(આધાર) of life. How can we not care for these water bodies? We use this garbage for landfill with no or minimal exposure(જોડાણ) to the outside environment(પર્યાવરણ). We ensure(ખાતરી) that the lake area and water-holding are free of garbage so that birds, frogs and snakes can live in peace(શાંતિ).

How many days does it take to clear a large lake? Do you use any special equipment for cleaning and safety?

Depending on the size of the lake and the amount of garbage, it can take anywhere between 5 days and 3 months to completely clean a lake. We have our tools like rakes and spades(કુલ્હાડી).

What kind of protective gear(સાધનો) do you use? Can you describe(વર્ણન) the cleaning process briefly(સંક્ષેપમાં)?

We wear nose masks, sanitary gloves and carry rakes(હાંકડા) and spades(કુલ્હાડી) with which we collect(એકત્ર કરવું) the garbage(કચરો) and dump(ફેંકવું) it into collection(સંગ્રહ) buckets(બકેટ) which are taken to the garbage truck. We also use heavy(ભારે) machinery(યંત્રો) like earth movers(ધરતી ચલાવનાર) and Poclain to desilt(ગાદ કાઢવી) the lake and clear(સાફ) the weeds(ઘાસ) and shrubs(ઝાડીઓ) that are harmful(હાનિકારક).

What, in your opinion(મત), can children and young adults do for the environment ? What could be a small beginning(પ્રારંભ) by all of us in terms of protecting(રક્ષણ) the environment?

Firstly, we should all stop(બંધ) throwing(ફેંકવું) trash(કચરો) outside our homes. Next, we should reduce(ઘટાડવું) the amount(પ્રમાણ) of trash we generate(ઉત્પન્ન). Straws(પીવાના પટ્ટા), tissues(રુમાલ), wrappers(પેકેટ), batteries(બેટરી), fast food junk(ઝડપી ખોરાક), all these end up in lakes and they come from our homes. If we can reduce the amount of garbage at home and if we can dispose(નિકાલ) all garbage safely(સુરક્ષિત), that itself is a great deal(વ્યવહાર). Every student is welcome(સ્વાગત) to volunteer(સ્વયંસેવક) with us in helping(મદદ) the environment.

How much time do school-going children need to devote(નિષ્ઠા), in say a week, for an environmental cause(કારણ)?

Four hours a week – that is two hours on Sundays and two hours on Saturdays. This small beginning is more than enough to ensure(નીશ્ચિત) larger participation (ભાગીદારી) later.

How can students and schools join your fraternity(સંઘ)? Do you have any programme(કાર્યક્રમ) to introduce(પરિચય) your work to them?

Yes, we offer(ઑફર) fellowships(સહયોગ) to interested(રસ ધરાવતા) students. Our programme looks at young animal lovers(પ્રેમી), young wild life photographers(છાયાચિત્રકાર), film-makers(ફિલ્મ બનાવનાર), theatre artists(નાટકકાર) and scientific researchers(સંશોધક). We give them training(પ્રશિક્ષણ) in these areas and get them actively(સક્રિય) involved(સામેલ) in all our work. Our youngest volunteer is in Class 3.
